2011 Highlights

(Source: google)

Whether we like it or not, 2012 is just around the corner. Before we start setting off fireworks and sparklers, popping champagne and wishing each other a Happy New Year, I decided to sit down and summarize 2011 in a couple of sentences and photos.

While I have noticed many people being dissatisfied with 2011 and hoping for a better upcoming year, I can undoubtedly say I'm grateful for everything that happened to me throughout these 12 months. At the same time I'm really excited to see what 2012 brings, beginning with Friday, which is my 18th birthday... I will be entering adulthood in style!

First of all, I certainly developed my passion for travelling. This year I went on three wonderful trips, saw a number of incredible places and met some inspiring people. Let's begin with my trip to Italy in May, which definitely was an unforgettable experience. For me, a person whose main role model in life is Audrey Hepburn, being able to walk down the same streets she did with Gregory Peck in 'Roman Holiday' was a source of inspiration.

Then, in June, I visited Slovakia and the amazing Polish mountains, where despite my lack of scouting skills, I managed to climb to the top of this mountain- 1152 metres above the sea level. We spent our days wandering around the town, cooling off in clear mountain streams and relaxing in Slovakian thermal pools. However, I have recently come across a bunch of photos from that trip and I was planning to make a separate post about it.... so I'll leave it here.

At the end of July, I set out to visit my family in Germany.  It was beyond amazing to spend some quality time with people I don't get to see on a daily basis, organise short road trips, throw barbecue parties in the backyard and practise my (unfortunately, still basic) language skills among native speakers. In addition, it turned out they have impressive end-of-season sales.... what's not to love?

This year also gifted me with new friendships, which will hopefully appear to be long-lasting ones.

'The world comes to life and everything's bright
from beginning to end when you have a friend by your side
that helps you to find the beauty you are, when you open your heart and believe in the gift of a friend...'

This song is, in my opinion, a pure definition of friendship. William F. Halsey once said: 'All problems become smaller if you don't dodge them, but confront them'. I can undoubtedly say I managed to do that with the help of my friends and I ended up being much stronger.

Last but not least, the road of self-discovery brought me where I am right now- the community of fashion bloggers, constantly evolving and defining my style. Those 8 months I spent with you have been a wonderful and unforgettable time. I'm thankful for every single reader and comment, you give meaning to this whole blogging experience of mine. All I can say is, I hope that it will keep getting better and better with each passing day. There is something I would like to achieve in 2012 and I have already made some plans, so keep your fingers crossed!

Happy New Year to all of you, may this upcoming year be full of joy & love. It's the time of new beginnings and I hope 2012 will be filled with success so that you can make your innermost dreams come true!

Let the party begin!

It's down at the end of Lonely Street at Heartbreak Hotel

As some of you might have already known, I'm a small-town girl living in a place that is livened up only in summer by a number of tourists, including amateur sailors and nature lovers. Therefore, you can imagine how much furore has been created by an announcement that an old Teutonic Knights castle will be turned into a 4-star luxurious hotel to attract more visitors. The grand opening has recently taken place and of course I couldn't resist and visited the place on their open days.

This picture was taken on entering a two-storey suite. That's where I let my romantic side out, as I have been dreaming of having similar stairs in my future house ever since I was a little girl- even my favourite Barbie house playset contained them. What immediately springs to my mind is the thought of looking at the significant other from the above feeling like Juliet on her balcony. I told you I can be a hopeless romantic at times- consider yourselves forewarned :)

What are your impressions? Would you be willing to pay this place a visit?

All I want for Christmas is...

Even though all presents have already been bought and wrapped up in brightly coloured paper, I decided to take a second to compile a list of what I would like to find under the Christmas tree this time. It's still hard for me to believe that the big day has come and our traditional Christmas Eve supper is less than five hours away. Where has this year gone? Looking outside my window, it doesn't look like Christmas at all. It's been raining cats and dogs all day and all I can think of right now is 'I'm dreaming of a white Christmas...'

Anyway, here's the list I promised:

1. A lace dress from H&M.

2. Vintage jewellery.

3. A bottle of wonderful perfume.

4. Some shoes from DeeZee, preferably nude.

At this point, I would like to wish all of my lovely readers a Merry Christmas. May this day be magical, filled with joy and spent among your loved ones because love is what matters the most. Free your hearts from worries, after all Christmas is a time of forgiveness. Last but not least, may Santa bring you all your dream presents.

Here's the video that put a huge smile on my face:
All I want for Christmas is you.
I can undoubtedly say it made my day. So rad! I hope you're gonna like it as well.

Last Christmas I gave you my heart...

I can honestly say going through old photographs has recently become one of my favourite activities. What really amazes me is the fact that you can make any moment eternal with just a snap of a shutter. Regardless of how much time has passed, watching photos always brings back memories and never fails to put a huge smile on my face. My trip to Italy has definitely been one of the highlights of 2011. Pretty much to my surprise, having opened the 'Italy 2011' folder I came across some last year's Christmas pictures that must have been misplaced and immediately decided to share them with you.

Since it's about time we put our Christmas tree up, a heated discussion started whether to go for blue/silver or red/gold decorations this time. The opinions were mixed until I saw the photo of Ariana Grande's Christmas tree posted on Twitter.

I can undoubtedly say it was love at first sight.... or, should I say, love at first tweet. On Saturday me and my Mom went to the Christmas Bazaar. I let my creative side out and picked some lovely decorations. Unfortunately, there were no red bows in stock, but I hope the result will be at least half as satisfying as originally planned.

Tomorrow afternoon, me and my classmates are meeting together with our form teacher to celebrate our own Christmas Eve. Everyone is scheduled to bring a Christmas dish and we drew lots to decide who each person is buying a present for. I will definitely keep you updated!

And while I'm away, I'll leave you with a couple of my favourite songs to make you feel oh-so-Christmasy. Always works for me!

Wham!- Last Christmas
Mariah Carey- All I want for Christmas is You
Shakin' Stevens- Merry Christmas Everyone
Cliff Richard- Mistletoe and Wine
Sarah Connor- Christmas In My Heart

What are your favourite Christmas songs?

Saint Nicholas Day

In many countries 6th December is known as Saint Nicholas Day. Here, we have one of the most unique and interesting traditions. When it gets dark and all family members are getting ready to go to bed, we sneakily stuff their shoes with gifts. I can still remember when, being a little girl, my parents made me clean my shoes claiming that Santa always ignores the dirty ones. Or, not locking up the front door because of me constantly asking 'How will Santa get into our house?' Good times. The more grown-up you are, the less fun it actually is... but I find myself looking forward to this day every single year anyway.

In the afternoon, there was a special Saint Nicholas Day performance in our local cultural center. They have gathered both dance groups and teen music bands. Considering the fact that some of our friends were taking part, me and my best friend decided to go and show them some support.

Here are the pictures of me right before going to the concert. Excuse the quality, but they were taken with my phone.

Blog of the week

Fashionfreax is a fashion community enabling people to share photos of their outfits, rate other people's looks and submit thoughts on fashion. My blog has recently been chosen to be featured in their 'Blog of the week' tab and I was asked a couple of questions.

Here's the full interview:

The blog of the week – This week we present to you the blog Glamourxkills, by Dominika (Glamourxkills) from Poland. Dominika is 17 years old and her main passions in life are music, travelling and fashion. What inspires her the most is discovering new places, meeting new people and her dream to become a fashion designer in the future. Two of her dream cities are the Big Apple and the British capital, and she is quite sure that some day, it’s exactly where she will end up. As she plans on living on forever, you will probably hear from her, but for now, you should check out her answers to the questions we sent to her!

How did you get in touch with fashion?

Even as a child, I used to wear girly dresses, take my mother's or grandmother's high heels and pretend to walk in them. I started taking fashion seriously a few years ago, inspired by various fashionistas and celebrities.

Why do you have a fashion blog and for how long for?

A few years ago, while thinking about my future plans, I came up with an idea to study Fashion Management or something fashion-related. I started my blog in April 2011 as a way to meet people with similar interests and make sure that's what I want to do in the future.

What are your favourite blogs?

There are so many blogs I read on a daily basis, but my favourite bloggers are: Allegra (allegrabj.blogspot.com), Lauren and Madison (awkwardgirls.blogspot.com), Vale (fashionandcookies.com) and Natalie (lucyandtherunaways.blogspot.com). All of them are really stylish & inspiring.

What do you do in your "real" life?

I am a 17-year-old high school student who's taking advanced courses in History, Polish and Social Studies. When I have some free time, I hang out with my friends and listen to my favourite music. In summer I enjoy visiting different countries ;)

Do you have a favorite designer(s) or fashion icons?

I love Jeffrey Campbell's designs. They're so unusual and every single one looks like a work of art. As for fashion icons, my biggest inspiration is Audrey Hepburn. I could watch her movies all the time and I aspire to follow in her footsteps one day.

Would you like to say anything else concerning your blog or in general?

I would like to thank fashionfreax for choosing my blog, it means a lot to me! I am just a beginner, but I would like to encourage everyone to visit my blog. I really enjoy meeting fellow fashionistas and I believe I will keep getting better and better ;)

Time to wrap it up!

I can undoubtedly say it's all about layering this season. Stores are filled with various oversize sweaters, from cuddly knit cardigans to those resembling potato bags. To be perfectly honest, it has been my obsession for some time now. Having hit a couple of boutiques, I came to notice that the cardigans which were worth paying attention to were usually the ones I would have to splash out on.

Thrifty as I am, I decided to give it a try on the Internet. Even though I think nothing can replace going through the clothing racks and putting on pieces of clothing, I have recently begun to resort to e-shopping. There are no big retailers in my town and I had to satisfy my fashionista needs somehow, so at some point it has become an every-day reality for me. At times, you can find some real bargains or unique clothes.

These are my recent finds:

1. A camel poncho from H&M, as seen here:

(Not my photo, source: lookbook)

2. A cuddly knit cardigan from H&M.

(Source: eBay)

I am now ready to wrap myself up in my latest finds and spend cold weekends snuggled up on the sofa watching some of my favourite movies or documentaries.

I'm also slowly getting myself in the Christmas spirit. Can't wait to start listening to my favourite Christmas songs on repeat, decorate our Christmas tree and run around the stores in search of presents for my friends! Can you? What part are you looking forward to the most?

I am a STYLEpreneur!

My friend has recently come across a site called StyleOwner and forwarded it to me, bearing in mind that I'm keen on fashion issues. To be perfectly honest, it immediately caught my eye. The idea behind this site is to allow selected fashionistas to open their own online stores in cooperation with the StyleOwner team and promote social selling. Without a shadow of a doubt, I applied, even though I didn't set my hopes too high.

You can only imagine how delighted I was when after a hard day at school, on opening my inbox this e-mail was waiting for me.

Greetings!

Congratulations- you've been selected to be one of our very first store owners in our private beta launch. StyleOwner is proud to combine the power of social networking, e-commerce and fashion to offer you a new online business opportunity.

I got round to setting up my new store as soon as I read the last line of their message. Beginning from scratch is never easy-peasy, but with a plenty of excitement it was a pure pleasure for me. I was given a list of designers, posh stores and their clothing to choose from and I let the fun begin. Having finished a couple of hours later, all that was left to do was wait for the confirmation.

Greetings Dominika,

It's official- you are now a STYLEpreneur! Thank you for setting up shop (literally!) and becoming part of our exclusive community.

STYLEpreneur Status: We bet you've always been a trendsetter. Your reputation as an innovator will continue to grow as you pioneer the exciting new frontier of social shopping. In fact, now you can add STYLEpreneur to your resume (STYLEpreneur: An aspiring businessperson who possesses great style and a love of fashion).

I have taken on a new experience, which is certainly enriching, inspiring and means a lot to me as an aspiring fashionista. I DO realize some of those prices are slightly exorbitant, but I have no control over this aspect. If you happen to know anyone, who would be interested in purchasing those things anyway, I proudly present my new store:

Glamour Kills
I will probably be adding new items to the store soon, so stay tuned.

Much love!

MTV EMAs 2011

This year's MTV Europe Music Awards were held in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The event took place at the Odyssey Arena on November 6 and was hosted by the amazing young starlet, Selena Marie Gomez. Due to a number of dazzling outfits, impressive performances and some unexpected nudity on stage, it was certainly a night to remember.

My favourite EMA moments:
* short videos with Selena Gomez as a hostess played in the meantime
* a male streaker interrupting Hayden Panettiere's speech
* the Amy Winehouse tribute
* Selena Gomez & The Scene performing 'Hit the lights'
* Adam Lambert performing with Queen as a closing act (this one sent chills down my spine!)

Anyway, as this is a fashion blog, I am now, as usual, going to present my favourite looks of the night. Sit back, relax and enjoy the show.

Hayden Panettiere stepped out on the pink carpet wearing a black and white patterned mini dress from Tibi's Autumn/Winter 2011 collection. She teamed it with a pair of Christian Louboutin peep-toe heels, showing off her amazingly tanned legs. I really am in favour of her outfit, as it's the essence of femininity and the natural hairdo suits Hayden very well.

Bar Refaeli was lighting up the pink carpet in a Replay gown made specifically for her and wonderful black stilettos. What needs to be born in mind is the fact that no matter how beautiful, this dress shape is appropriate only for people with long, slim legs. It goes without saying that Bar has the body to rock this outfit, though.

Ashley Rickards, the star of MTV's Awkward, went for a metallic cocktail dress paired with matching heels. As she's a petite girl, the cut outs on the sides added more glam to her overall look.

That's where we get to my favourite part- the hostess. Selena Gomez stayed true to Katy Perry's advice that a good host should have a number of outfit changes and left us enchanted with her clothing throughout the whole event.

The first outfit Selena rocked at the EMAs was a lace Marchesa dress with ruffle skirt (the same as seen on Blake Lively, look here). She finished the look with a pair of embellished Neiman Marcus peep-toes and a clutch. I have already expressed my admiration for this dress while posting a picture of Blake. Those of you, who read all of my posts, know that it was love at first sight... and it still lasts.

At the very beginning, Selena appeared on stage in a ring of fire. I can risk a statement that her wonderful maxi dress with leather top kept the fire on. Having accessorized it with a black necklace, the Texan beauty looked absolutely stunning.

The next outfit change gave Selena a more youthful look. This time she went for a fruit print Moschino dress and updated it with a pair of Luisa Via Roma stilettos. What can I say... a pretty person looks pretty in virtually everything. And I can assure you that all eyes were on her.

Have you seen this year's EMAs? If so, which moments did you like the most? Which outfits were your favourite ones?

Saturday Shopping

Having taken into consideration that winter is almost on the way, I decided to hit a few stores this Saturday. Frankly speaking, I'm not too enthusiastic about this time of the year since I'm obsessed with all kinds of dresses. I am simply the worst at dressing for cold weather, I treat having to wear pants as a sort of torture... I have been procrastinating for a long time, but I gave it a try & went shopping for warm/cuddly clothes once again.

However, it would certainly be too good to be true if I came back with a bunch of sweaters only... I got hold of a polka dot dress which needs to be tailored, a couple of tops AND, ladies and gentlemen, a lovely cardigan in my favourite beige colour. Here are the pictures of some of my recent finds...

A lace top- H&M (Conscious Collection)

A tie-front beige cardigan- H&M
A floral top- Primark

Plus, on a Saturday evening my mom was in the mood for cleaning out her closet to make room for some new stuff... Having heard that she wasn't going to wear this lovely winter jacket with fur, I gladly snagged it and put in my wardrobe.

What do you think about those pieces of clothing? How is your fall/winter shopping going? Have you recently bought anything interesting? Feel free to drop me a line!

By the way, you can see a poll on the right. I would appreciate it if you could take a moment to vote for the next Modern Fashion Icon.... Thank you all in advance!

Enjoying a few days off

Hey everyone,

First of all, I'm terribly sorry I haven't updated my blog in a while. It's been a couple of hard and stressful days at school. Having finished with all of my tests and assignments, we got 4 days off, so I was just enjoying some well-deserved 'me' time. In the meantime, a couple of family members paid us a visit and then, it was the other way round. To make up for my absence, I decided to show you the outfit I wore on Saturday. Excuse the quality, as the photos were edited using Instagram.

A pink cardigan- Vero Moda
A zebra print maxi dress- H&M

I can undoubtedly say this dress is among my favourite ones and, therefore, holds a top place in my closet. Not only does it look beautiful, it's also highly comfortable and appropriate for both formal & casual occasions.

What do you think?

Burberry Body

A British fashion house, Burberry has recently launched a new fragrance called Burberry Body in about 150 countries all over the world. Known for a number of intelligent campaigns, this time they went to great lengths to advertise their brand new product. Having read on their Facebook page that it's 'a warm and feminine fragrance with an eclectic combination of sensual ingredients', I requested a sample without a shadow of a doubt. After about two weeks of getting no response, I finally came to terms with the fact I wasn't probably going to receive it at all... And that's when an unexpected message popped up in my inbox:

'Thank you for requesting your Burberry Body sample via Facebook. Due to overwhelming demand we have been unable to ship some of the requested samples within the suggested timeframe. We are pleased to inform you your sample is now on its way. (...) We hope you enjoy your Burberry Body and look forward to your feedback.'

I am more than pleased to say they definitely are the men of their words. When I got home from my private English class yesterday afternoon, that's what was waiting for me patiently in my bedroom....

Was it worth the wait? To be perfectly honest, I have mixed feelings about this one. The scent notes were described as 'a luxury chypre – fruity composition that begins with notes of fresh green absinthe, peach and freesia. Roses and iris are in the heart, leaning on the base of sandalwood, cashmerean, musk, amber and vanilla.' Tempting as it may sound, in my case it wasn't love at first sniff. It's a bit too strong for my taste, as I usually go for sweeter fragrances. There's one thing we can all agree on, though- they managed to capture luxury in a tiny vial.

Have you had the chance to test this perfume? If not, the best thing I can possibly recommend is to give it a try and place your request by liking Burberry's Facebook page.

Happy sampling, people! Looking forward to hearing your opinions.

Modern fashion icons: Blake Lively

Blake Lively is an American actress and model, mostly known for her role as Serena van der Woodsen, the 'it girl' of the Upper East Side on 'Gossip Girl'. Due to growing popularity of the show and her remarkable sense of style, she joined the group of people who are being sent designer clothes to wear to public events. Her beauty must have enchanted one of the most famous designers in the world, Karl Lagerfeld, as Blake was the first American girl to be offered to become a Chanel ambassador.

Blake attended the WonderCon in San Francisco wearing an open-front Carven dress from the Spring 2011 collection. She combined the puffy skirt with a white bustier top, drawing attention to her neckline and impressively long legs. What really added to her seemingly simple look was a pair of ankle strap Christian Louboutin pumps.

In June, she appeared on 'The Tonight Show with Jay Leno' to promote her new movie, 'Green Lantern'. This time she went for a gold shimmering Missoni dress. She mixed it with a white vest top and fabulous Christian Louboutin sandals, which gave her a fresh and stylish look.

Ever since I spotted this look in a fashion magazine, I can't get over how gorgeous this red Marchesa dress is. Lace details go along perfectly with open back and a ruffle skirt. Having taken a closer look at some more pictures, I noticed that her Brian Atwood platform pumps were slightly too big for her, but who cares- if I was offered to wear these lovelies, I would take them regardless of the size.

The outfit Blake rocked during the premiere of 'Sherlock Holmes' in New York sparked off a lot of controversy. She stepped out in a strapless lace Dolce & Gabbana minidress paired with gold Christian Louboutin pumps. According to some people, she showed off way too much. To be perfectly honest, I was enchanted when I first saw this outfit. She has an amazing body and pulls it off in style, I don't see any reason why she should hide behind baggy dresses. Do you?

Blake Lively and Chace Crawford dressed up in 1920s era clothing while filming party scenes for 'Gossip Girl' at the Empire Hotel in New York. Blake was lighting up the filming set in her sparkling Collette Dinnigan dress. She complemented her darling look with a silky wrap, Judith Leiber crystal clutch and a pair of Christian Louboutin pumps.

With Leighton Meester as they shoot new scenes for 'Gossip Girl'. That's an example of an effortless, yet impressive summery outfit. She teamed her Rag & Bone maxi dress with a pair of Sigerson Morrison T-strap sandals. Personally, I am in favour of maxi dresses- you simply can't go wrong with them.

Bearing in mind that fall has already come and is here to stay, this outfit immediately caught my eye.
I would gladly fill more than half of my wardrobe with nude/beige pieces of clothing if I could. It's my favourite colour- excluding black, that is. Blake accessorized a buttoned coat with a Hermes leather bag and a knitted beret- a great combination for slightly colder days.

Do you like Blake's style? Which outfits are your favourite?
I put up a brand new poll on the right, so you can now vote for the next Modern Fashion Icon. Also, if you have any suggestions as for what I should write about in the nearest future, feel free to drop me a line. I might take some of them into consideration while working on my new posts.

Have a good one!
